No one’s who they seem in the thrilling new Nick and Nora Mystery, and someone’s playing the part of a clever killer . . .
When a nighttime soap opera comes to town to film an episode, no one’s more excited than Nora Charles, who’s landed the contract for catering the shoot. But if she thought the show’s plotlines were full of drama and intrigue, that’s nothing compared to what she witnesses among the cast and crew, who are sneaking off for secret liaisons one minute and at each other’s throats the next. It’s all a titillating behind-the-scenes look for Nora — until she stumbles across the body of the show’s slain director.
It’s not long before the local authorities finger the brother of Nora’s good friend for the evil deed, and it’s up to Nora and her sidekick Nick to get him off the hook. As she begins to sort out the cast’s romantic entanglements and professional rivalries looking for a motive, she also discovers that the victim was involved in the mysterious death of the show’s previous director. And then another member of the crew is found murdered, and Nora knows she’ll have to act fast to figure out who’s playing the part of the killer, before she’s cast in the role of the next victim . . .
Includes scrumptious recipes!
About the Character Interview
What is your full name? Do you have a nickname? Nora Myrna Charles. My parents were big Thin Man fans. My current sweetie, Leroy Samms, calls me “Red.” I hate it.
What is your occupation? Are you any good at it? Do you like it? What is your ideal job? I’m an ex-true crime reporter turned sandwich shop owner, and I like to think I’m good at both! I recently passed a PI course, and I’m debating whether or not I’ll apply for a license. My ideal job? Solving mysteries, of course.
When you’re not working, what fills your time? I like to read and try out different recipes. I’ve expanded my sandwich shop into catering, so I want to enlarge my culinary expertise.
What is your favorite childhood memory? Sitting on the stool in our kitchen and watching my mother cook. I think she instilled a love of food in me.
What advice would you give to your younger self? Don’t take yourself so seriously.
What is your greatest achievement? I consider every mystery I solve a great achievement!
What makes you laugh? My cat Nick’s antics. Nick can be many things at many different times. He’s always an enigma.
What is your greatest extravagance? I’d have to say the new smoothie machine I bought for Hot Bread! That baby cost a bundle!
What are your pet peeves? Rude, inconsiderate people, people who are full of themselves.
Tell us something about yourself that no one else knows. I can play the accordion. It’s a talent I don’t advertise.
What is always in your fridge? Rocky Road ice cream!
What is your most treasured possession? A beautiful cameo brooch my mother left to me.
If your life is made into a movie, is it a comedy or drama? Who plays you? Comedy or drama? I think that would depend on whether or not Nick is in it with me, and if we’re solving a mystery. Then I think it might be a “dramedy,” a combination of both. Who would play me? Wow! I actually think Mayim Bialik might be a good choice. She’s already got a cat café TV show.
What is your favorite movie? TV show? I love the movie Music and Lyrics. I loved how the Hugh Grant character reinvented himself in that movie. TV show? Bones! I always thought the chemistry between Brennan and Booth was undeniable — much like the chemistry between me and Nick! (Okay, he’s a cat. So what???)
What is your favorite song, and why? “That Old Black Magic.” It’s so mysterious LOL. And fits in with our next adventure!
What did you eat for breakfast? Did you make it yourself? Of course I made it! Today I had a Howard Stern Special — scrambled egg with cheese and peppers on an onion bagel.
Describe your perfect day. A day when a mystery I’ve been working on is solved, and Nick and I and my BFF Chantal are celebrating!
About T.C. LoTempio
While Toni Lotempio does not commit – or solve – murders in real life, she has no trouble doing it on paper. Her lifelong love of mysteries began early on when she was introduced to her first Nancy Drew mystery at age 10 – The Secret in the Old Attic. She and her cat Rocco pen the Nick and Nora mystery series, originally from Berkley Prime Crime and now with Beyond the Page Publishing. They also write the Cat Rescue series from Crooked Lane and the Pet Shop series, originally published by Midnight Ink and rebranded last year as “Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries.” Book six in the Nick and Nora mysteries, A PURR BEFORE DYING, is released this February from Beyond the Page. There is also a new series, Tiffany Austin Food Blogger, coming out in April.
