There could be nowhere more fitting for English professor Lila Maclean to spend her sabbatical than in a proper Victorian mansion. The whimsical Callahan House seems to have materialized from the pages of the mystery novels she is researching, with its enchanting towers, cozy nooks, and charming library. Unfortunately, it also features a body in the study.
Residents of Larkston have long believed that the Callahan family is cursed — the murder on the estate sets the town buzzing. Wild rumors are fueled by a gossipy blogger who delights in speculation, and further crimes only intensify the whispers and suspicions. A newly discovered manuscript, however, appears to expose startling facts beneath the fictions. When Lila steps in to sort the truth from the lies, it may cost her everything, as someone wants to make dead certain that their secrets stay hidden.
About The Character Guest Post
The Study of Secrets
by Cynthia Kuhn
Professor Lila Maclean here — though I’m not on campus at Stonedale University, where I teach English. This term, I’m on sabbatical and reporting from Larkston, Colorado.
Over the fall semester, I’ve had the good fortune to be working at an amazing Victorian mansion on the edge of Silver Rush Lake.
Technically, I’m staying in the guest cottage out back, but I spend most of my days in the main house, doing research on Isabella Dare and writing my own mystery novel. I’ve also been organizing the files in the study as a thank you to my kind host — and some of what I’ve discovered has been thrilling.
But back to the location: Callahan House happens to be famous around here as the first home built in this town by Godfrey Callahan, a silver mining magnate. The mansion has a whimsical design, with towers and all sorts of architectural embellishments that make it truly one of a kind. It was painted in a variety of colors, and the palette carries over inside, where each room features a different jewel tone. Priceless antiques and vintage furniture finish off the stunning décor.
There are some rumors about the house. Some people think it’s cursed because of the multiple tragedies that have befallen the residents. Others, like my host, suspect that there are hauntings. Such whispers never stop the popular tours from marching through the hallways, however, and the nearby college is always more than happy to hold special events there (the annual holiday party, to which the entire town is invited, is an especially beloved and over-the-top tradition).
As you can imagine, it was a glorious semester at Callahan House. At least until a body showed up in the study…
