Weeding out killers wasn’t part of the job description . . .
Kelly Jackson, manager of the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast, is excited to participate in an event to raise awareness for the plight of struggling veterans in their Northern California coastal community. Local wineries are sponsoring tastings, and to prepare for a culinary competition, professional chefs will forage for wild edible greens. Kelly plans to come along, despite a warning to beware of poachers, who have been stealing the highly valued succulent Dudleya farinosa. The senior sleuths who call themselves the Silver Sentinels join forces with environmental activists known as the Succulent Saviors to thwart the poaching operation. When a consultant for the sale of a local winery is murdered, the poachers are suspected — but so is a wine merchant, Kelly's friend Phil. As Kelly and the Silver Sentinels attempt to root out the real killer, what she digs up might just put her permanently underground . . .

The Next Dog
by
Janet Finsilver
All of my mysteries include dogs with special training. In my most recent book, Murder in the Wine Country, I introduce Rex, a cattle dog that is a seizure alert and response dog. The ever-present Fred the Basset Hound is in the book as well, as he is in all of them. Fred was trained to detect cancer but failed his test and was given to a young boy as a pet. I'm now searching for what kind of canine might romp through the pages of my next book.
I recently learned about mobility assistance dogs. These are trained service canines that perform various tasks for their owners. The law requires that someone requesting a mobility service dog must have a developmental, physical, or psychiatric disability that prevents them from doing daily tasks.
The person’s home is outfitted in a way that the dog can assist with the needs of that particular person. I found a long list of many things that the dog can do for its owner. A few of them include the following: turning lights on and off; opening and closing doors, drawers, and closets; retrieving the phone; and providing support while walking up and downstairs. In addition, the dogs can pick up dropped items, carry bags with small objects, and hit elevator buttons. Some can be trained to go and get medicine when necessary.
There are many conditions that can make a person possibly be a candidate for having a mobility assistance dog. Gait difficulties, impaired balance, neurological disorder, arthritis, and vertigo are a few of the ones mentioned.
I recently read a story about a young man named Cougar who broke his neck at the age of 15. He became a quadriplegic. Cougar had been a competitive athlete. He was determined to become the best he could be and worked hard at his therapy. Cougar got stronger and stronger and regained some of his mobility. Nineteen-year-old Cougar has now competed in Special Olympics triathlons.
He decided he wanted a dog to train with him as well as go with him when he started college. The search began, but he didn’t rush into it. He felt he would know when he met the right dog. He and his mother visited an animal rescue place. That’s where he met his new companion, Bagel. They immediately connected.
He is now working with the lively, young black dog and looking forward to when he can start his service dog training. He found a local trainer who knows how to train Bagel with the competitive racing type of bike that Cougar rides. It’s a special bike that has a place for Bagel to sit. Once the dog is certified, he can go with the teenager when he competes. When that happens, he will become one of the few canines that competes next to a special needs athlete.
Dogs are truly man’s best friend. Not only are they there for us with unconditional love, but they also provide many people with a chance to live a more normal life of independence. I don’t know if a mobility assistance dog will be in my next book. However, I enjoyed learning about yet another way dogs contribute to our lives.
