From the critically acclaimed author of SIBA Okra Pick A Murder for the Books, Victoria Gilbert embarks with a new series for perfect for fans of Kate Carlisle and Juliet Blackwell.

A book lover's B&B in an idyllic waterfront village becomes the scene of a grisly murder -- and a ruthless battle between treachery and the truth.

Nestled in the historic waterfront town of Beaufort, North Carolina, Chapters Bed-and-Breakfast is a reader's paradise. Built in 1770, the newly renovated inn hosts a roster of special events celebrating books, genres, and authors. It's the perfect literary retreat -- until a rare book dealer turns up dead in the carriage house during a celebration of Golden Age mystery author Josephine Tey.

The victim's daughter points the finger at forty-two-year-old widow and former schoolteacher Charlotte Reed, who inherited the B&B from her great-aunt Isabella. Charlotte is shocked to discover that the book dealer suspected Isabella of being a thief who founded Chapters on her ill-gotten gains. Charlotte has successfully learned the B&B business in a year, but nothing has prepared her to handle a death on the premises.

Armed with intelligence and courage and assisted by her vibrant older neighbor, a visiting author, and members of a local book club, Charlotte is determined to prove her innocence and to clear her great-aunt's name. But the murderer is still at large, and equally determined to silence anyone who might discover the truth behind the book dealer's death. Now, Charlotte must outwit an unknown killer -- or end up writing her own final chapter.

About the Guest Post

The Girl in the Rum Barrel
BOOKED FOR DEATH is set in the very real town of Beaufort, North Carolina. Among the many unique and charming aspects of this coastal town is the “Old Burying Ground,” an historic cemetery now owned by the Town of Beaufort and managed by the Beaufort Historical Association.

Although established earlier, the graveyard was officially deeded to the town of Beaufort in 1731. It first grew up around the building used for sessions of the local court and the services of the St. John’s Parish Anglican Church. That original building was later replaced by the Ann Street Methodist Church, which was built in 1854 and retains an active congregation today.

Shaded by old trees wrapped in wisteria vines, the cemetery has been carefully preserved by the Historical Association, which has also created an informative free brochure to guide visitors. The brochure provides fascinating information on twenty-eight of the graves, including several officers and soldiers from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War; Pierre and Annie Henry, African-American leaders in the education of emancipated slaves; and several sea captains.

But perhaps the most unusual of the graves is that of an unnamed young girl who was buried in a barrel of rum. Sometime in the 1700s, the girl accompanied her father on a trip to London, England, her family home. On the return ship voyage, the girl died of an illness and her father – who had promised his wife he’d bring their daughter home – refused to allow her to be buried at sea. The father purchased a barrel of rum from the captain of the ship and placed his daughter inside in order to bring her body safely back for burial in the Beaufort cemetary.

Even today, this unnamed girl is remembered by visitors, who often leave flowers, stuffed animals, and other trinkets by her grave.

Just one of fascinating stories associated with Beaufort, NC!
