Paramedic and deputy coroner Zoe Chambers responds to a shooting and discovers her longtime friend, Horace Pavelka, has gunned down a man who’d bullied him mercilessly for decades. Ruled self-defense, no charges are filed. When another of his tormentors turns up dead in Horace’s kitchen, Police Chief Pete Adams questions the man’s innocence in both cases… especially after Horace and his girlfriend go into hiding.
While fighting to clear her friend, Zoe is handed the opportunity to finally learn what really happened to her long-lost sibling. What starts out as a quick road trip on a quest for answers leads her to an unfamiliar city in the middle of a November blizzard, where she finds way more trouble than she bargained for.
Pete’s own search for his missing fiancĂ©e and a missing murderer ultimately traps him in a web of deception. Face-to-face with one of the most cunning and deadly killers of his law enforcement career, Pete realizes too late that this confrontation may well be his last.

The Seed of the Story

By Annette Dashofy

I always begin planning a new book with some seed of an idea. Often, the idea comes from a news article. The “real” part of the story usually takes up no more than half a page in my book because I add a healthy dose of “what if” to that seed and allow it to blossom from there.

The news story that I borrowed from to create Under the Radar happened years ago but stuck with me. A quiet, gentle soul of a man was attacked outside his home by someone who had bullied him for quite some time. This same gentle man had been bullied by others in the past. He finally had enough and, when the bully came after him again, killed the person who attacked him. It was deemed self-defense and he was exonerated. Castle Doctrine came into play in his case.

I knew I wanted to use the topic of bullying in a book. I also wanted to explore the intricacies of the Castle Doctrine. And so, I started writing this book.

Here’s the thing about my books. I always start with an idea or two or three, because there must be intertwining subplots. While I try to follow a loose outline as I write, sometimes the characters take me in a different direction than I intend. Such was the case here. I did cover the effects of a lifetime of bullying, although not as deeply as I’d like. And the whole Castle Doctrine theme dropped to the wayside.

Not that I’m too upset. I have material to spare for a future book or short story. And Under the Radar grew into something even darker and more suspenseful thanks to the characters taking control of the helm.

The victim of the bullying, an old friend of Zoe Chambers, finally stands up to his tormentor, then goes missing after a second homicide, which is linked to the first and is definitely not self-defense. Police Chief Pete Adams believes him guilty. Zoe does not, and wants to find her friend and convince him to turn himself in before he gets hurt or worse.

Further complicating matters, there’s a mysterious man with no past lurking around town, Zoe has to deal with a surprise visit from her disapproving mother, and a lead to finding her long-lost brother is dropped in her lap. Toss in the “road trip from hell” and a blizzard, and you have Under the Radar. It may not be the story I started to write from that seed, but I’m happy with what it grew into.
