The Blurb
It’s been a slow news month in Richmond, and crime reporter Nichelle Clarke is enjoying the downtime when ominous messages and a dead body kick things into high gear. And that’s before the guy with the rifle takes a hospital full of people hostage.
Up to the top of her knee-high Prada boots in leads, Nichelle finds her favorite detectives under pressure to make an arrest, but it doesn’t add up — and ignoring the “why” of this story could cost Nichelle the most important person in her life.
With too much to lose, a shot at the story of a lifetime, and a missing bullet that might be the key, landing this headline could save the day, but can Nichelle dig up the truth before the killer buries her with it?

The Review
Cover Shot, a cozy mystery, is the fifth book in the Headlines in High Heels Mysteries by LynDee Walker. The previous books in the series (Front Page Fatality, #1, Buried Leads, #2, Small Town Spin, #3 and Devil in the Deadline, #4) are amazing reads also — five Kitties each! My review of Small Town Spin is here. My review of Devil in the Deadline is here.
[NOTE: This book can be read as a stand-alone, as far as the mystery itself; however, to understand the back-story of all of the characters, I recommend reading the series books in order.]
Author LynDee Walker has yet another winner with Cover Shot, the fifth entry in her Headlines in High Heels Mystery series. It's another realistic look at investigative and crime journalism, through the eyes of her sleuth Nichelle Clarke. Some of the events may not be fun, but Nichelle's (and LynDee's) sense of humor is evident, to add needed levity to serious or tense situations.
Why do I like Cover Shot so much? Hmmm... there are many reasons, but so many of them contain spoilers. Alas, I can only share a few of my reasons with you.
Among the best parts of Cover Shot, here are some that are spoiler-free.
FYI, y'all — LynDee's sixth book in the series, Lethal Lifestyles, is scheduled for release from Henery Press in Fall 2016. I can't wait!
I highly recommend the fantastic Cover Shot, which has earned our highest rating of Five Kitties!
Why do I like Cover Shot so much? Hmmm... there are many reasons, but so many of them contain spoilers. Alas, I can only share a few of my reasons with you.
- Cover Shot has a unique, intriguing, and riveting plot — fictional, thankfully, yet very believable.
- Nichelle's inner Lois Lane — an internal voice that whispers answers and ideas to her, sits up and pays attention or takes notes when "they" hear something intriguing, agrees with her when Nichelle gets a good idea, disagrees when Nichelle's ideas aren't so good, and even screams at her when Nichelle has missed an important clue.
- Nichelle’s dogged determination to dig up everything she can discover, when she’s investigating a lead.
- The way several seemingly unrelated sub-plots come together.
- Joey! — Nichelle’s mysterious, gorgeous, tall-dark-and-handsome "gentleman caller."
Among the best parts of Cover Shot, here are some that are spoiler-free.
- The scenes with Percival, aka Percy, a socialite’s
furry fashion accessorylong-haired chihuahua. - The part when the guy with the rifle takes a hospital full of people hostage, and then Nichelle [sorry -- spoiler].
- Any scene with Joey is a great part!
I highly recommend the fantastic Cover Shot, which has earned our highest rating of Five Kitties!
