About the Interview with Deena Alexander
When did you catch the writing bug? I first started writing when my youngest son, now twelve, was born and didn’t sleep at night. I’d always enjoyed reading and decided to give writing a try.
Besides Author, what other job titles have you held? I have worked in a deli, as a dance teacher, cleaning houses, at the IRS, two clothing stores, and choreographing and co-directing high school musicals.
When you’re not working, what fills your time? I love spending time with family, sitting by the pool, reading, and long walks. I’ve just started to do some gardening too, but considering my black thumb, I’m not sure how that’s going to work out.
If your life were made into a movie, is it a comedy or drama? Who plays you? Some parts of it would be a comedy, and if one of my closest friends was played by Lucille Ball, Vivian Vance would be perfect as me.
What is your favorite childhood memory? Every time the newest Nancy Drew book came in the mail, I’d run off with it to sit under a tree and read the whole thing in one sitting.
What advice would you give to your younger self? Be patient. Everything comes exactly when it is meant to, and God knows better than I do what is best for me.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you? When I was fourteen years old, I was showing off and jumped a ramp on a bike, tumbled over the handlebars, and ruptured my spleen.
What is your greatest achievement? My children — ages 32, 24, and 12 — are my greatest achievement. After that, completing my novels and having them published.
What makes you laugh? My son; he’s quite a character.
What is your greatest extravagance? Books! I know that’s probably no surprise, but that’s the one thing I’m always willing to indulge in.
What is your pet peeve? My biggest pet peeve is anyone walking in the house with shoes on.
Tell us something about yourself that no one else knows. I absolutely cannot sit still. Unless I have a book in my hand, I have to be moving around and doing something constantly. It drives my husband crazy.
What is always in your fridge? Diet Pepsi. I drink way too much of it.
What is your most treasured possession? My mother gave me pictures of my son and daughter when they were little, and the frames have recordings of them. My daughter said, “I love you, Mommy.” And my son said, “Uh.” I cherish those!
What is your favorite movie? TV show? My favorite movie is Lord of the Rings. My favorite TV show is Smallville, and I leave it play most nights while I’m trying to sleep.
What is your favorite song, and why? Endless Love was mine and my husband’s song in high school.
What did you eat for breakfast? Did you make it yourself? I had a sausage and cheese omelet, which I did make myself.
Describe your perfect day. On a perfect day, I’d get up early and write at least a chapter, then spend the day by the pool with my husband, kids, and son-in-law. We’d have music playing all day and do homemade pizzas for dinner, then watch a movie on the outdoor screen.
Thank you so much for having me!
