The Blurb
Former pharmaceutical researcher Maggie O’Malley is losing sleep. Her boyfriend Constantine’s aunt is a multitasking sleepwalker who, in addition to wandering her stately home, prepares meals, folds laundry and, one winter night, stumbles across her husband with his throat slit.
It’s a rude and gruesome awakening that’s upsetting to Aunt Polly. And interesting to the police.
Maggie and Constantine work to uncover who killed the cosmetic surgery mogul and why. As they dig into the lives of those who knew him best, they discover that the truth is only skin deep and doctoring perception is a treatment with deadly side effects.
A gripping page-turner with more twists than a surgeon’s suture, 39 Winks is a tale of lies, betrayals and greed that will keep you up at night. And looking over your shoulder.

Keeping My Pants On
When it comes to writing, I’ve always been a plotter. No surprise, really. I’m a planner in the rest of my life. The person who likes routine. The one who always has a backup plan. And a backup to the backup plan. I suppose it’s my way of controlling what seems like a chaotic and unpredictable world. If I can put order to my schedule — and my books — then maybe the rest of my life will fall into place.
And in Book Writing World, this approach has served me well. My 20-something-page outlines have helped me write a book that was nominated for an Agatha and Lefty for best first novel, and help me finish the second book in the Maggie O’Malley series ahead of schedule.
And yet lately, I’m starting to feel a little, well… pantsy.
That’s right. I’m antsy to be a bit more of a pantser, someone who flies by her (or his) seat of the pants when plotting.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m still all about the outline. I just find that lately I’m a bit less rigid. I’m more willing to see where my characters want to go. More courageous in following their lead.
The surprise? Sometimes they seem to know where they’re going better than I do.
I’ve discovered that “pantsing” allows me to see plot opportunities and thematic connections that I sometimes miss by slavishly following an outline. It lets me peer around the blind spots I’ve created and create greater depth. It’s allowed me to let go and let the story unfold for myself, as well as the reader.
As I welcome 39 Winks into the world, I’m reminded of the magic of discovery, both in reading and in writing. It’s great to have a map, but there’s something to be said for finding the unexpected around the next corner.
