9/29 Update: Congratulations to the winner, Bethany N, entry # 233! Thank you to everyone who liked Jane Reads!
Welcome to the 3rd Annual Banned Books Week Giveaway Hop, hosted by Kathy at I AM A READER and Mary at BookHounds. There are over 75 blogs participating in the hop this year. This is the first year that Jane Reads has joined in the fun.
But first, a word from our sponsor:
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
(from the ALA website)
The American Library Association has compiled lists (per decade) of the top 100 books that have been challenged or banned from public libraries and schools most frequently since 1990. At least 46 of Radcliffe's Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century have
been banned or challenged. Some of these books may be controversial, but each reader (or parent) should decide, for oneself or for one's child, what to read.
