The Guest Post
How Ideas are Born
The first story line came to me from a news story, or more specifically, the two-second tease. It went something like “Local farmer attacks neighbor with machete.”
I never heard the actual story. These six words set my mind spinning. As a lifelong country girl, I understand and empathize with farmers. So, I mused, why would a hardworking farmer attack his neighbor?
My mind started clicking. First of all, it wasn’t a “machete.” It was a corn knife. Not a weapon but a tool. As for the why, I puzzled out that the neighbor was a clueless city dude, who moved to the country and who — in spite of repeated requests from the farmer — refused to stop throwing his grass clippings over the fence to the farmer’s horses. Horses have notoriously delicate digestive systems and will literally eat themselves to death given the opportunity (read a mystery novel, learn about equine biology). After numerous large vet bills, the farmer takes his corn knife (machete) with him as he confronts the Clueless City Dude yet again with a plea to cease and desist. Hence, the resulting headline and the beginning of Cry Wolf.
My second story thread came from my previous book, Uneasy Prey, in which Police Chief Pete Adams and his sister move their dad, Alzheimer’s-stricken Harry, into an assisted living facility. Harry, having a cop for a son and a disease that clouds his view of reality, sees people leaving Golden Oaks on stretchers and believes there’s weird stuff going on. “People are being murdered around here!” Pete and Zoe investigated and determined that no, no one was being murdered. But at the end of the book, I had a nagging feeling that Harry’s story wasn’t complete. And if I felt that way, I had to believe my readers did too.
So, I brought Harry back and I created a homicide at Golden Oaks. A real one. The book is titled Cry Wolf after all.
The third story thread came out of a regret I had, reaching back to the second book in the series — a theme I felt I’d left unexplored. How different would Zoe’s life be if her father hadn’t been taken from her? While I couldn’t bring him back, what would happen if she learned she had an older brother she’d never known about? With the popularity of the DNA tests for ancestry, it made perfect sense to bring in a character searching for his sibling — Zoe. Now she has this man in her life in whom she sees her dad and who wants to care for and protect her. However, her newfound brother has issues with police in general… and with Pete in particular.
And now you know the story behind Cry Wolf’s three tangled threads that tie Zoe and Pete in knots.

Annette has spent her entire life in rural Pennsylvania surrounded by cattle and horses. When she wasn’t roaming the family’s farm or playing in the barn, she could be found reading or writing. After high school, she spent five years as an EMT on the local ambulance service, dealing with everything from drunks passing out on the sidewalk to mangled bodies in car accidents. These days, Annette, her husband, and their spoiled cat live on property that was once part of her grandfather’s dairy.
